Woodstock Day Nursery went on a Toddle Waddle one sunny, windy morning in May as everyone – children, staff and a number of parents – went for a walk on the seafront to raise money for Love Your Hospital.
Our babies travelled in double buggies, our toddlers walked on reins and our 3 and 4 year olds walked in twos . . . . or they did until we reached the main promenade! We walked from Farncombe Road, across Beach Green and along the prom to the Pier. On the Pier we were able to look back at Worthing picking out familiar landmarks and get down on our hands and knees to peer through the gaps to watch the waves underneath. There were lots of questions about what the fishermen were doing and why . . . . . . in fact there were lots of ‘whys’ and we were a little too noisy for the fishermen so we moved on quickly. We had fun with the pre-schoolers running up the Pier and hiding from their friends as they caught us up and looking at all the artwork on the glass dividers; we have sponsored one of the panels but that one hasn’t been finished yet so we’ll have to come back.
The walk was only meant to be about a mile and a half, but some of the pre-schoolers walked and ran much further as they went backwards and forwards between the staff. As we returned to Beach Green we stopped at the sand playground to take full advantage of all the climbing frames, slides and swings.
We finally returned to Woodstock for a much needed drink and snack with more play in our own garden. The parents left for a quiet day or to return to work, but the children were still full of energy.
Love Your Hospital sent John along to see us at our Family Tea Party a couple of weeks later and he was amazed to learn that we have raised over £800 for the charity. Well done to all our young intrepid trekkers.
